Democracy activists' website shut down

August 7, 2000

Chinese state security authorities have shut down the New Culture Forum website for posting "reactionary content." The site, which is the first China-based site started by veteran democracy activists, is run by a group of dissidents in Shandong Province. Authorities have begun a manhunt for the webmaster who goes by the name Xin Wenming. On four separate occassions, the state security police have interrogated the general manager of Million Internet Company, which hosts the New Culture Forum website. Authorities have already blocked Internet access for users registered with the Million Internet Company, and have threatened the company's complete shut-down if Xin Wenming is not turned in.
